Tips For Setting Up A Financial Management System

Do you need to get organized? Are you the sort of person who's system for financial management is keeping their financial records in a pile on the kitchen bench? Do you find it next to impossible to locate a specific bill or receipt without spending hours searching through this pile, or the other pile in the corner of the bedroom? You need to get organized! Having all your legal documents, bills, receipts and family/personal records organized will save you hours of frustration and time. There are many simple filing systems that are so easy to use, you'll wonder why you didn't do this years ago.

One of the easiest ways to file all your stuff is to buy a filing cabinet and the folders that go with it. Then all you have to do is drop your documents in the cardboard folders in alphabetical order and presto! You can put your hand on anything you want in a few seconds. If you don't want to go to the expense of a filing cabinet, you can purchase a plastic box that will fit the same type of hanging files in it. Once all those papers are up off the floor, you won't accidentally suck some into the vacuum cleaner!

Another way to get organized that is even cheaper: Buy a stack of cardboard folders or sturdy cardboard boxes and label them with appropriate headings. Simple titles such as "Bills to pay" and "Receipts" make it easy to find what you are looking for. You'll always know what you've paid and what is due if you do this. Large envelopes can be used in the same way. Just make sure you label them clearly and at the bottom so that when you stack them the title will be easy to see.

It's great if you can claim a small space somewhere in the house as your 'office'. Decorate it cheerfully so you'll enjoy spending time there when you have to. Even if you are limited to envelopes in a drawer, make them colorful ones. Stay away from drab and dreary, then you won't mind using them when needed. Color does play an important part in how we feel about things.

There are computer programs that make it easy to keep financial records. Quicken is one and Excel is another. You may even have Excel on your computer. If you don't know how to use them, invest in some training. In fact, you may be able to access free training in this area. Councils often put out free training courses, so keep an eye out for advertisements in your local newspaper or at the library. Once you are more organized you'll wonder how you managed with that untidy pile on the kitchen bench.
