Actually it's easy really.
There are three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The Federal Trade Commission allows you to get one free credit report each year from each of these credit reporting agencies. (There is a charge for any additional credit reports you request over the course of a year.)
Of course, you can get a free credit report from each of the credit bureaus all at the same time, but here's a better strategy: Get a free credit report every 4 months. Order one from one credit bureau the first time, the second one from another credit bureau 4 months later and the third from the third credit bureau 4 months after that.
This way you can keep close check on the progress of your credit report and credit score for free, while also making sure you haven't been the victim of identity theft.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has set up a website to help you get a free credit report. Just go to www.annualcreditreport.com
Once you get there, find the request form and fill it out. Mail your completed Annual Credit Report Request Form to:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
The toll-free number if your would prefer to call them is 1-877-322-8228.
Do Not contact the three nationwide credit bureaus directly to get a free credit report. They only allow you to get free credit report through the FTC annual credit report website, phone number, and address above. If you contact the credit bureaus directly, you will have to pay a fee for your report.
If you can't get a free credit report because you have used up your free report requests, do buy one from one of the three credit reporting agencies. It's very important to know your credit score. Find out why here.
You will find more information about these credit bureaus here.

Getting a copy of your credit report is a VERY important step in your credit card debt relief plan. Once you start paying down your debt, your credit score will rise. A higher credit score means lower interest rates - and more money in your pocket!
